The DC Extended Universe has recruited many great directors, hiring them to use their unique styles and skills for their slate of popular comic book films. As a result, there have been a diverse array of extraordinary takes on some of the world's most famous characters.

The DCEU kicked off with Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel, and while Snyder is no stranger to the comic book movie or visual epic, many of the series' subsequent directors weren't. However, they still brought their own unique voices, visions, styles, and indie sensibilities to the amazing world of DC Comics superheroes. If a fan was impressed by their styles, then maybe they will like their other projects.
300 - Zack Snyder - 61%
As many fans know, the DCEU has been referred to as the "Snyderverse." This is because many people believe that he had set a visual template for several of the subsequent films that followed (before they branched out and did their own thing). However, prior to his Superman and Batman films, one of his most famous films is perhaps his adaptation of the Frank Miller graphic novel, 300.
300is a fictionalized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae during the Persians Wars. Gerald Butler plays King Leonidas, who leads 300 Spartans against an army of 300,000 Persians. The movie is pretty much a shot-for-shot adaptation of the graphic novel. It is also imbued with Snyder's signature visual flair (including slow motion and graphic violence).300 was a massive box-office hit and critics considered it one of the best graphic novel adaptations ever made.
Watchmen - Zack Snyder - 65%
Following the massive box-office hit, 300, Snyder would tackle another graphic novel adaptation, Watchmen. Perhaps considered the greatest graphic novel ever written, many filmmakers, including Terry Gilliam, had attempted a film adaptation in the past, but over the years, many directors labeled the graphic novel as unfilmable.
However, Snyder proved them wrong with his visually stunning adaptation of the story that's set in an alternate 1980s and sees superheroes outlawed. It also sees several retired heroes investigate the murder of one of their former teammates.
At nearly 3 hours (or over for the director's cut), Snyder pays reverence to the deconstructionist superhero tale, adapting it faithfully with his signature visual style. However, some critics felt the film was all visuals and lacked the source material's nuance. Ultimately,Watchmenled to Snyder tackling Batman and Superman a few short years later.
Insidious - James Wan - 66%
Aquaman director, James Wan, got his start in the horror genre with his debut film being the seminal horror classic,Saw.He's since followed that up with many horror movies penned by his frequent collaborator Leigh Whannell, such as 2010's Insidious.

Starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne as parents whose son becomes a vessel for evil entities, the film was seen to be a hit with critics. They found it to be an engrossing haunting house movie that didn't have to rely on the violence and gore Wan used so much of in Saw. The movie was a massive box office hit, making $99 million off a $1.5 million budget.
Dawn Of The Dead (2004) - Zack Snyder - 75%
Zack Snyder made his feature film debut with the remake of George A. Romero's zombie classic, Dawn Of The Dead, which saw a group of survivors held up in a shopping mall during a zombie outbreak. The film was even written by Guardians Of The Galaxy and future DCEU movie director, James Gunn.
Like all Snyder movies, it was praised for its visuals. However, fans of the original criticized some of the changes, such as the zombies frantically running instead of walking ominously slow. To date, this is Snyder's most highly acclaimed film. Snyder is even returning to his zombie roots with the upcoming Netflix film, Army Of The Dead.
Fury - David Ayer - 76%
After writing and directing several LA-based gritty cop dramas, Ayer used his signature styles to help create the World War II film,Fury.Starring Brad Pitt,Fury tells the story of a crew aboard a Sherman tank, who undertake a deadly mission while outgunned and outnumbered behind enemy lines.

Critics and audiences praised the film for its realistic World War II depiction and considered the battle sequences some of the best since Saving Private Ryan. Fury was a box office hit and Ayer'sbiggest hit up until then.
Lights Out - David F. Sandberg - 76%
Director David F. Sandberg's entry in the DCEU, Shazam, was praised for the remarkably lighter and relatively, family-friendly tone as compared to the previous Zack Snyder films in the series (which is surprising considering that Sandberg's prior work was in the horror genre).
Based on his own short film, and produced by fellow DCEU director James Wan, Lights Out tells the story of a woman who often sees a strange silhouette figure in the dark that she can never see when the lights are on. While some critics and audiences enjoyed the film, there were a few that criticized the movie for the way it approached mental health and suicide.
Monster - Patty Jenkins - 81%
Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins's debut film was Monster, the biographical drama about the life of serial killer Aileen Wuornos, who was sentenced to death for the murder of seven men. The film was praised for Charlize Theron's Oscar-winning, transformative performance (although it has been criticized for attempting to humanize her).
The acclaimed filmput Patty Jenkins on the map. However, this was the last Hollywood saw her for a while. Between 2003's Monster and 2017's Wonder Woman, Jenkins made no films. As several projects fell apart and she spent her time raising her family, Jenkins eventually found herself working in television for a decade.
She almost returned to the screen withThor: The Dark World, but ultimately left due to creative differences. Luckily, directingthat film might have prevented her from helming Wonder Woman, which opened to critical acclaim and stellar box office.
End Of Watch - David Ayer - 85%
David Ayer started off as a screenwriter, notably for gritty cop movies, mostly set in Los Angeles (such as The Fast and The Furious and Training Day). End Of Watch deals with two dedicated South Central LA cops dealing with their day-to-day lives in one of LA's most dangerous neighborhoods.
Unlike some of Ayer's earlier work that dealt with police corruption, End Of Watchinstead focuses on good cops and the friendship between them. The movie was a hit at the box office, brought on by word of mouth, and critics found it to be one of the best cop dramas in recent years. Ayer would then bring this grittier sensibility to the DCEU with 2016's hitSuicide Squad.
The Conjuring - James Wan - 86%
James Wan continued making critically acclaimed horror films with The Conjuring.Based on purportedlytrue events, the film concerns two famous paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, who investigate a family's haunted Rhode Island farmhouse in 1971.
The Conjuring was a massive critical and commercial successpulling in over $300 million on just a $20 million budget. Many critics and audience members consider it to rank among some of the scariest movies ever made. This success led to a sequel and a third film out later in 2021, although it isn't directed by Wan.
Dead Pigs - Cathy Yan - 96%
2020's Birds Of Prey was perhaps one of the more unique entries in the DCEU, as it was a mix of colorful visuals, humor, and great action. It was only the second film from director Cathy Yan, who was originally a reporter before she turned to filmmaking.
Her first film was the 2018 Sundance Film Festival hit, Dead Pigs, a dark comedy inspired by a true incident. Set in Shanghai, the film focuses on several individuals, whose community is affected by the rise of commercialism and the class divide. This indie film also received positive reviews, with Empire stating how it's "a bold satire that never loses its fun." Yan certainly has a great career ahead of her.
